Micron Powers Nvidia's 30 Series Graphic Memory

Micron Technology has partnered with NVIDIA to supply the Graphic memory for the latest GeForce RTX 30 Series GPU. Popularly known as GDDR6X, these memory can power system bandwidth up to 1 terabyte per second which is significantly higher than GDDR6 (0.7 TBPS) memories. From the Nvidia's 30 series Graphic cards, the GeForce RTX 3090 and 3080 with memory size of 24GB and 10GB respectively will feature this faster memory. The newer memories are tailored to support high-performance gaming application demand. However, GeFroce RTX 3070 from the same series will be powered by GDDR6 graphic memory.

On a recent press release Tom Eby, senior vice president and general manager of the Compute & Networking Business Unit at Micron stated, "Our multilevel signaling innovation in GDDR6X has shattered conventional bandwidth limits, clocking record-breaking speeds."

Innovating the signal transmission technology Micron has achieved the breakthrough in Bandwidth limitations. Since 2006, Micron's engineers are researchers were working on the possibility of applying multilevel signaling to the memory interface. Finally they were able to figure out four-level pulse amplitude modulation which coined the term PAM4.

Transmitting one bit per cycle, the traditional binary standard limits the data transmission up to 64 gigabytes per second. However, Micron's PAM4 technique allowed four distinct levels to trans two bits of data to and from the memory at a time. This innovative method allows to increase memory bandwidth to 84 gigabyte per second to each component which translates to system bandwidth of one terabytes per second.

As the PC gaming industry expanding at higher rate and games are becoming more and more sophisticated, the demand for higher performance and advanced Graphic cards are all time high. Sharp visual graphics, real-time ray tracing, 8K resolution and realistic light reflections requires huge data transmission between GPU and Graphic Memory. Micron's innovative technology (PAM4) is one more step towards meeting that ever growing demand.
