Samsung Electronics recently announced the introduction of two new Image sensor for its future mobile devices. On a press release published today, Samsung has confirmed that the company will go for mass production of these sensors by the second half of this year.
Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright GW1 and GW2 Image Sensor.
Among these two, the ISOCELL Bright GW1 is a 64 megapixels and GW2 is a 48 megapixels image sensor which belong to the Samsung’s 0.8 micrometer architecture lineup. From this specific category, top of the line product is an existing 20Mp image sensor which will be superseded by these new image sensors.
Executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics, Yongin Park believes, “With more pixels and advanced pixel technologies, Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 and GM2 will bring a new level of photography to today’s sleekest mobile devices that will enhance and help change the way we record our daily lives.”
Both the sensor would be using the existing pixel-merging Tetracell technology which will allow the GW1 to produce highly detailed 64MP shots in bright settings and 16MP image in low-light environment. Another technology which is being used on both the sensor is Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) which converts the light received into an electric signal according to the illumination of the environment.
It is interesting to know that Apple also uses Samsung CMOS image sensors (S5K3M3 & S5K3M3+) on their latest iPhones (rear camera). That may also mean that Apple iPhone users may expect to get this new update on the upcoming new iPhones as well if everything goes as usual. Since there are no official confirmation on this regard from Apple, we only can speculate.
