Crucial M500 CT240 SSD

This is my second SATA III based internal SSD drive that I have been using for over four years now. Initially I started using this drive as my boot/primary drive and traditional hard drives for storing documents and important files. After using this drive for few months, I realized that I can make a small partition on this drive to keep my documents as well rather than using another spinning drive. This happened due to the fact that when I work at night, the spinning hard drives makes noise and I didn't like it a bit.

This 240GB drive had enough space for Windows 7 installation along with other softwares that I used on daily basis. This how exactly I begun my journey for SSD only based system. This drive was so important to me that I was compelled to write a review after so many years of usage. As this drive is slowly heading on its way toward the end of it's lifespan, I thought to pay my tribute right now before its too late. I even installed Windows 10 on it with an additional partition for my documents and it worked like a charm.

As far as the specifications are concern (read/write speed to be exact), this drive has never been a top of line item. I don't think even the manufacturer had that intent on their mind either. It was more of an internal SSD that was meant to be mass produced to get the larger audience on board. In other words, keeping the price and performance in a balanced way so that people slowly start moving towards SSDs over traditional hard drives. I honestly think, Crucial was successful with this series if that was their main goal.

As you can see from the CrystalDiskMark result from the screenshot above, the sequential read (535.8 MBPS) and write (281.9 MBPS) speed is below SATA 3.0 standard (Read Speed 600 MBPS). However, the more acceptable range is around 550 MBPS read speed. This drive is performing little below average level. This result is not surprising to me, especially holding the fact that it's a four year old drive. Also, this is very well within the range of a fairly good drive for day to day usage. This drive has been used for well over 21,600 hours. That's more like using this drive for 900 days (21,600/24 hours) at a row. That's a fair amount of usage for a drive of that age. However, as you can see from the result above, the health status of this drive has been deteriorated by almost 25%. This is not surprising to me at all either. Though the SSD doesn't have any moving parts, it eventually will die out as the IOPS continues to rise with ongoing usage. To avoid any potential risk of data corruption, I already migrated to another M.2 based NVMe SSD which I will review soon enough.

All that being said, I would still rate this drive to be a very reliable drive with four star mark based on my personal experiences. At some point down the line, I will probably get another SSD of SATA interface to storing my documents for day to day usage. Until then, this drive will remain my secondary drive. By now, Crucial and other SSD manufacturers has released so many SSDs that it's almost impossible to find the best drive. Also please bare in mind that "best" is more like a variable, it depends on the type of usage we are talking about here. For average users, almost any SATA III based SSD would do just fine. If you want to get the most out of your SSD, go for M.2 based NVMe drives. That way you won't need to worry about good performance. If you have budget issue, stick with SATA based SSD.
