Top 5 Free FTP Client Software for Windows

If you are in web designing or development industry, I am pretty sure you are also familiar with the term FTP(File Transfer Protocol). In case, if you are not, definitely at some point you have to get used to with that. So, today in this post, I will share some of the best (my understanding) Free FTP client software available for Windows platform. Luckily, quite a few of them are also compatible with some other major Operating systems like Linux and Mac OS X and some of them are Open Source software. So, let’s get started.

FileZilla: Undoubtedly one of the most popular FTP Client software available out there. This is an Open Source FTP client that supports almost any Operating System (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and more) that any regular user can think off. It’s drag and drop, IPv6, FTPS & SFTP support makes this client as one of the most easy to use FTP client software. FileZilla is also capable of transferring files over 4GB in size. So, if you dealing with large files, FileZilla is the way to go. Personally, I am using this software since its second official release. A must have FTP Client software for any web developer or designer.

WinSCP: It is fairly simple Open Source Free FTP, SFTP, SCP client software. Unlike many other Open Source FTP client, this software doesn’t support any other Operating System besides Windows. It supports drag and drop features and has command line interface along with an integrated text editor. This software can be translated into many different languages which is a big plus for users from non-English speaking countries. The only thing that irritates me about this software is its user interface. There are just too many icons on the toolbar which you can definitely remove manually but its still not clean enough. If you are good with that, this is a great FTP client for you and yes, it has a portable version.

Cyberduck: I may not personally use this software but I would suggest it anyone who are not addicted to FileZilla. This software supports a wide range of server that includes FTP, SFTP, WebDav, Amazon S3 and more. There is a nice little bookmark manager which also supports drag and drop feature. The only thing that I didn’t like is that it doesn’t have the File explorer for your computer built into the main UI as many of us are accustomed to. You must press the “upload” button to select file or files. This is kind of annoying to me. If you doesn’t bother you, you definitely should give it a shot. Best part? This is an Open Source software and supports both the Windows and Mac OS X based computers.

CoreFTP: This software is around for quite sometime now and most probably many of us are familiar with this little FTP client. Written in C++, this software is available only for Windows platform. It supports SFTP (SSH), SSL, TLS, FTPS, IDN, browser integration, site to site transfers, FTP transfer resume, drag and drop, file viewing & editing, firewall support, custom commands, FTP URL parsing, command line transfers, filters and more. It has a very simple User Interface that makes it to be one of the best and easy to use FTP client software available out there.

CoffeeCup Free FTP: I am huge fan of Open Source software. However, this is one of my top choice for non Open Source FTP Client software for Windows. This is absolutely free and easy to use FTP Client software that I came across few years back. It’s modern yet simple UI would give you the clean and smooth user experience. It works flawlessly and does whatever it was suppose to.

So, there you have it. I listed all these FTP clients software based on my personal experience. There are quite a few clients (freeware) are out there which I felt “may not” be the best solution for many users. Especially for those who are just getting into this field. Ofcourse there are more that I could have listed. Clients like CrossFTP, FTPBox are also pretty promising which you can give it a shot with but please do it at your own risk. Let me know from the comment section below, which one you are using.
